Description

Hello –  we would like to swap our home and workspace in South Devon, UK. We live beside fairly busy roads on the edge of town but opposite woodland, with green views from all windows. You can park a couple of cars on our driveway, but it is possible to do without a vehicle altogether as we are only 10 minutes walk away from a mainline railway station. There are good public transport links to the cities of Plymouth and Exeter and all the amenities of a thriving market town within easy walking distance. South Devon is an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has historic buildings, ancient archaeological sites, dramatic moorland hills and pretty coastal villages, perfect for anyone who is inspired by landscape. We can be in central London or in St Ives, Cornwall, in under 3 hours by train making day trips to either of those destinations perfectly feasible.

At the top of the house, we have partially subdivided two large double bedrooms to create a big study bedroom overlooking the rear garden. Here it is possible to draw, read, sew on a large table – the space is also generous enough for yoga/tai chi etc. There is a second workspace downstairs, with a work bench and sink, suitable for small scale painting/ messy making, and a separate larger studio, under the main house but above ground in what was once a garage,  with good ceiling height.

Our home is warm and comfortable. The kitchen has everything you might need and has a large dining table with a bench and chairs. There are two bathrooms, one with a shower and another with a shower and a bath. The house is double glazed, has central heating WiFi and a wood burning stove in the living room. The large, steep garden is being re-wilded but I manage to grow a few veggies that don’t always become gourmet slug food! It has mature trees, a high level of privacy and plenty of places to sit in the sunshine or work outside on an elevated deck . Very close by is a network of cycle paths,  which link to Dartmoor via dedicated tracks and quiet lanes, and you are welcome to use my bicycle or to store your own in the shed at the rear of the house. The nearest beach is only 10 minutes away by car or train. We have a friendly cat who needs minimal attention, just food and the occasional stroke behind the ears! Please bear in mind that this property is not really suitable for people with mobility issues, or very small children, as the gardens and driveway are steep and there are a dozen steps up to the front door. We would consider swapping with anyone who could offer a peaceful place to stay and to work, in any country, ideally close to cultural centres and transport links as we prefer not to drive when travelling abroad. We are flexible with dates, though would prefer to avoid peak holiday seasons. We are both practising visual artists and writers and have many years experience working in Higher Education. Very happy to combine a vacation with tutoring, lecturing, or talking informally to other artists about what we do.
