Description

My studio apartment is small, which is important to me (low carbon footprint!), but beautifully decorated, full of light, and equipped with everything you need for a comfortable life — bathtub, big bed, well-equipped kitchen and, best of all, a very large balcony. The apartment faces south, onto a leafy courtyard, and gets a LOT of sun. Well, when Berlin is sunny anyway 😉 The balcony is quite toasty in the summer evenings; and since it’s covered, you can even curl up there under a blanket and book on cooler nights.

I put a lot of time and energy into the furnishings – almost everything is vintage and chosen with love: a mix of 60s Scandinavian, 80s Memphis Group, and a few “rustic chic” items) + hanging plants and quirky touches 😉

The flat is perfectly situated in the heart of Berlin, at the border between Kreuzberg and Mitte. The location can quite literally not be beat! Despite being so centrally located, it is in a very quiet and residential neighborhood. There is also plenty of green space within very close walking distance – from small little parks where you can have a picnic, to bigger, busier parks like Gleisdreieck and Tiergarten. The transportation options are fantastic — the apartment is located between three subways stops (Checkpoint Charlie, Hallesches Tor, Moeckernbruecke) and three lines (U6, U7, U1). Note that these are all a 5-10 minute walk from my house, so not right in front of the door (something to bear in mind if you’re arriving with many bags). Easy bus access is also available, and — best of all — biking almost anywhere within central Berlin is 5-30 minutes. The city’s many bike-sharing, scooter-sharing, and drive-sharing services also always have many vehicles available in the direct vicinity of my apartment. We could also discuss you swapping my bike during your stay.

Please DO note that it is a residential neighborhood – an oasis of quiet within the heart of the city. That means you will not have a million restaurants, cafes, and bustling life right outside the front door. There are a couple basic necessities right outside the door (a little bakery, a few restaurants, and a few street food shops). And bustling neighborhoods are not far off (two third-wave hipster coffee shops are within very close walking distance, as are a handful of good restaurants). But when you walk out the door, things are quiet. There are also a bunch of grocery options near by, ranging from budget-option supermarket chains to food coops to organic stores, but all of them will require a 5-10 minute walk.

As for tourist sites – Checkpoint Charlie is a few minutes away, though I wouldn’t recommend it. But there is also the Martin Gropius Bau and the Topography of Terror nearby; and a 5 minute bus ride (or 15 minute walk) away, there are all the museums at the Kulturform @ Potsdamer Platz. There is also a huge movie theater there that shows movies in English (without German dubbing). The Hau theaters are within 5 minute walking distance if you want to take in a play. And the Liquidrom, a fantastic sauna/spa, is a 10 minute walk away, as is the Tempodrom concert venue.

Neukölln is a 20-30 minute bike ride away, depending on what part you’re going. All the best Berlin clubs are within 15-30 biking distance as well.

I have a studio nearby, where I go to write… There’s a chance that could be swapped as well, though this would have to be discussed.

I myself am open to almost all exchanges, though I tend to not leave Berlin between April and October… But being a writer keeps me flexible, so I’m down for shorter or longer swaps, anywhere in the world.
